put your best face forward: beauty tips for different face shapes

Apr 26, 2012 | By: Lauren Taylor

Face it: your face is a big part of your identity. It’s the first thing people notice about you. To always put your best face forward, work with your shape and learn how to highlight your best features.  It’s like the old song says: “You've got to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative.”

Diamond Face: Scarlett Johansson

Diamond in the Rough

Diamond shaped faces like Scarlet Johansson’s are characterized by a narrow forehead and jawline with wide, high cheekbones.  Other famous diamonds are: Linda Evangelista, Kate Bosworth, Scarlett Johansson and Sophia Loren.

Beauty Tips:

  • Eyebrows should have a curved arch like Sophia Loren.
  • Accentuate your chin and forehead with a light touch of bronzer. Guerlain Terracotta ($50) is the go to bronzer of every top makeup artist.
  • Your cheekbones are the envy of all your friends!  Select a blush or bronzer that works with your skin tone. Sweep from the apple of cheeks to the ears.

Round Face: Drew Barrymore

Well Rounded

Round faces like Drew Barrymore’s are full with a round chin and hairline and no angular features.  Other celebrities with round faces include: Cameron Diaz, Kirsten Dunst, Katherine Zeta Jones, Emma Stone, Charlize Theron, Olivia Munn, Kate Winslet and Isla Fisher.

Beauty Tips:

  • Sculpt eyebrows with a high arch.
  • Accentuate your perfect pout.  Take a cue from Drew and highlight your cupid’s bow.  A dark lipstick will make your face appear rounder, so use a nude lip liner for definition, followed by something light and sheer like Chanel Glossimer in Amour ($30).
  • Create the illusion of angular features by contouring with bronzer and highlighter. Tom Ford Beauty Shade & Illuminate Palette ($75) is worth every penny.

Heart Face: Zoe Saldana

Heart You

A heart-shaped face like Zoe Saldana’s is widest at the temples and hair line and tapers to a delicate pointy chin. Other Celebrity hearts include: Reece Witherspoon, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Zoe Saldana, Rachel Bilson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christina Ricci, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Katie Holmes, Ashley Green, Cheryl Cole and Mary-Kate Olsen.

Beauty Tips:

  • Eyebrows should be rounded to balance a pointy chin.
  • Accentuate your large eyes with smoky makeup.  Pull the corners of your eyes up and out and follow your lash line with an eye pencil in charcoal or taupe for this spring. Polish the look off will a killer concealer. Cle de Peau ($70) works serious miracles.
  • Balance smoky eyes with nude lips.

Oval Face: Natalie Portman

A Perfect Oval

Oval faces like Natalie Portman’s are slightly narrower at the jaw line than at the temples.  Other celebrities with oval faces include: Julia Roberts, Halle Berry and Jessica Alba.

Beauty Tips:

  • Go with soft, angled brows.
  • Accentuate your cheek bones. Hit the apples of your cheeks with a rosy hue.  YSL Creme de Blush ($38) is a favorite among makeup artists and celebrities.
  • Be daring and try a cute pixie cut. Oval faces are great candidates for short hair because of their exquisite bone structure.

Square Face: Gwyneth Paltrow

Such a Square

A square face like Gwyneth Paltrow’s has angular features and a strong, prominent jaw-line that is slightly wider than the temples and hairline. Other Celebrities with square faces include: Kiera Knightly, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Aniston, Rachel McAdams, Salma Hayek, Olivia Wilde, Christina Hendricks, Demi Moore and Sandra Bullock.

Beauty Tips:

  • Balance your strong jawline with strong, thick brows. Fill in brows with Anastasia Brow Powder Duo ($22).
  • Accentuate a great smile with berry stained lips.
  • Keep your pearlies white with professional teeth whitening or a DIY home whitening kit.

Rectangle Face: Liv Tyler

A rectangular face like Liv Tyler’s is about twice as long as it is wide.  Other celebrities with rectangular faces include: Sarah Jessica Parker and Gisele Bundchen.

Beauty Tips:

  • Keep eyebrows flat or with a very low arch.
  • Apply blush from the Apples of cheeks to the ears.
  • Accentuate your favorite feature.  If you have a bee stung pout like Liv, stain your lips with a candy apple hue.  If your eyes are the window to your soul, play up your lashes with a lengthening mascara like Maybelline Lash Stiletto ($8).
